Depart Stromness on a scenic coach transfer through Orkney’s rolling countryside to Kirkwall. Take a coastal path along the seafront, passing spectacular views of the formidable hills of Hoy, plant and sea life as well as derelict gun batteries from the world wars. After 30 minutes we will arrive at the Highland Park Distillery.
Far away in the storm-lashed Orkney Islands is the place where magic happens. Here, Highland Park single malt scotch whisky is made, in very much the same way as it was made over 220 years ago. The distillery is perched atop high ground on the southern edge of Kirkwall, and stands watch over the town. As well as a collection of ancient stone buildings, they have 23 warehouses, and two pagoda-topped kilns. Incidentally, although the warehouses are numbered from 1 to 25, there are actually only 23 of them – one of history’s little mysteries. For over 2 centuries, the distillery has sat stoically through long winters, raging storms and 100mph winds. It all makes for more harmonious whisky.
You will enjoy an in-depth, enlightening foray into Highland Park. You´ll start with a short film about Orkney and the origins of Highland Park, accompanied by their ´dram to discover`, followed by a tour of the distillery and finishing with a tasting of 12 year old Viking Honour and 18 year old Viking Pride in their private tasting room.
Next, we will take you to Kirkwall where you can explore the city for 1,5 hours at your own pace. Afterwards enjoy a scenic coach transfer back to the ship.
