Whether it’s down winding alleys, along city palaces or past churches and chapels, all streets in Avignon lead to the papal palace where Pope Clement V settled at the beginning of the 14th century, followed by later popes and antipopes. The tour of this fortress-like building takes you inside the large staterooms, to the chapels, the private quarters of the popes and onto the terraces with a magnificent view of Avignon and the Rhône. Every year in June, the palace surroundings also play host to the world’s most famous theatre festival. After the papal palace, the tour will take you via the Saint Agricol Church to the “Rocher des Doms” where you can take in the magnificent view over the Rhône Valley and the ruins of the Pont d’Avignon from this rocky vantage point.
