Description

Nestled in between the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea and the dramatic mountains of Cévennes is Nimes. Travel to this beautiful city, which in Roman times was one of the most prosperous towns in Gaul. There are numerous well-preserved Roman remains, including an amphitheatre, built around the 1st century CE to seat 24000, and a temple dedicated to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, which now houses a collection of Roman sculptures. The Tour Magne, set atop a hill on the outskirts of Nîmes, is the city’s oldest structure and was incorporated into the Roman wall in 16BC.
After a lunch in a vegan restaurant, we visit the famous Pont du Gard, an outstanding Roman aqueduct bridging the valley of the River Gardon in three impressive tiers of arches. This bridge, crossing over the Gardon River, is one of the most-well preserved legacies of ancient Roman architecture in France; an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This amazing feat of engineering used to carry around 44 million gallons of water a day from Uzès to Nimes, from along a 30-mile route to the fountains, baths and homes of the citizens of Nîmes.
